Educational Curriculum Should Be On Solid Rock

Torome 23rd Dec 2018 14:55:26 General  0

How often do we hear politicians telling us how badly the Educational system needs to be overhaul to equip School and university graduates with the necessary aptitudes and skills to enter today's labour market.

If we keep changing the curriculum (school or college) just to satisfy the whim of a popular politicians or a special vocal community sect, we are doing our educational system no favours. Because that foundation is built on shifting sand instead of a solid rock. Granted, it should always be in need of constant maintenance and improvement but solid nonetheless.

Tony Blair's policy of giving more people access to universities as a means of increasing social mobility was all well and good in intention but poorly thought-out. Granting further education colleges and polytechnics university status and lowering entry level qualification to help facilitate this policy was ill judged.

Vocational Qualifications were implemented into the system as far back as anyone can remember. Those who were not able to meet up with the rigour of academic subjects had an alternative route with more emphasis doing more practical things which does not demand the ability to solve Partial Differential Equation (pun intended) but the fundamentals of Arithmetic . New courses or curriculum were added as industry and market forces dictated.

The so called paucity in medium-skilled jobs and Web Designers alluded in this article(The Times 9-04-2019) makes my point poignantly. These are what vocational and colleges of further education were meant to cater for. Our a educational system from primary to university level is now in effect a political football - failing to properly address the needs of the nation. It is any wonder we now described certain people on television or the internet as influencers (snow flakes) when back in the days your father , mother or teacher was the perfect fit.
